About Grouper

Grouper is a visualisation similar to TagsCloud, excepted that all your tags are contained in groups. Groups allow to pack tags that match pre-defined or user-defined criteria, explicitely representing specific kind of relations between your tags.

Grouper is intended to be a tool managing, organizing and cleaning up your bookmarks (though this is not implemented yet), but it will already be quite useful to make a parallel, precise exploration of your bookmark.

Using Grouper

Grouper represents all your tags in 3 groups, sorted by alphabetical order. The 3 default groups are "MOST USED", for the tags that you've used the most, "LESS USED", for those which have been used a few times, and "COMMONLY USED" for the rest. These basic groups allow you to spot quite easily which tags are "category tags", which ones are "sub-categories", and which one are either specific topics or deprecated tags.

By moving the mouse cursor on the different groups, you will see, as always, the current tag being highlighted (in green) and the related tags being also highlighted (in blue). You can notice that the tags get highlighted even if they are in a different group than the current tag.

You can now drag a tag and drop it on the background. You will see that it has just created a new group. You can now start to fill this new group by dropping other tags from the other groups. If you want to remove a tag, you can simply drag it from your new group and drop it on the background.

This new group has a different colors and also has icons : the little cross at the right allows to close the group, while the other one allows to add relatedtags to the group.

To add related tags, simply click on this icon, and the group will be filled with every tag related to the content of the group at the time of the addition. If you select tags by clikcing on them, only the tags related to the selection will be added.

When there is at least one tag selected in the group, two new icons will appear : the first one (right next to the "add related" icon), allows to remove all tags related to the selection (excepting the selected tags). The other icon allows you to keep only related tags, which means that any tag which is not related to all selected tags will be remove (excepted the selected tags).

These operations allow you to create groups of tags that are related in a way that you decide. You can rename groups by dragging and dropping a tag on the group name, which will then become the same as a tag (no editing is implemnted yet).

You can search in any green group by clicking on the arrow right next to the title. This will search for posts being tagged with every tags of the group (which usually will return nothing), or will search for posts being tagged with every selected tag in the group.

You can eventually zoom and pan the visualisation using the mouse (click and drag on the background) or using the keyboard. Panning is done with the arrow keys, zooming s done by using SHIFT and the UP and DOWN keys.

Grouper has some potential to become a front-end for managing your tags (creating bundles, merging tags, removing deprecated tags, etc), so if you want to have this kind of features, just contact us !
